Just above Lavarella, you reach the famous “Parliament of Marmots”, a natural amphitheater where marmots can often be seen in the wild.
Passo delle Erbe
At 1,987 meters above sea level, Passo delle Erbe is one of those places that feels untouched by time.
Located at the entrance of the Puez-Odle Nature Park, it offers breathtaking views of the Sass de Putia (2,875 m), a symbolic Dolomite peak.
From here, several trails start, including a beautiful 12 km loop around the mountain — a moderate hike that takes around 4–5 hours through meadows, ridges, and panoramic huts.
Brunico
A short drive from San Vigilio brings you to Brunico, a charming alpine town perfect for culture, shopping, and gastronomy.
Inside its castle you find the MMM Ripa museum, dedicated to mountain peoples from around the world.
The castle dates back to the 13th century and was built by Bruno von Kirchberg, bishop of Bressanone, to protect the Val Pusteria region.
Lago di Braies
About one hour away lies Lake Braies, one of the most famous lakes in the Dolomites.
It is undeniably beautiful, especially in the early morning light, but in recent years it has become extremely crowded due to social media and television exposure.
For this reason, it is best visited early or outside peak season, to truly enjoy its magical atmosphere.
