San Vigilio di Marebbe Dolomites: a Relaxing Holiday in the Heart of the Alps

There are places that are not just destinations, but real chapters of your life.

For me, San Vigilio di Marebbe is one of them. It is where I learned to ski, where I spent many Christmas holidays with a decorated tree inside the hotel room, and where I still return today — even in summer — to find inner balance, thanks to the external harmony that this place offers through nature, peace, and an exceptional quality of life.

Located in the heart of the South Tyrolean Dolomites, described by Le Corbusier as the most beautiful natural architecture in the world and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, San Vigilio di Marebbe sits at the foot of Kronplatz (Plan de Corones) and at the gateway to the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park.

For this reason, it is one of the best destinations in the Dolomites for those looking for a relaxing holiday in nature without giving up comfort.

An Authentic Retreat in the Dolomites

San Vigilio has managed to grow without losing its soul. You will not find the chaos of overly touristy resorts here, but rather a rare balance: high-level services, carefully designed hotels, excellent dining, and above all, overwhelming nature.

In winter, it is a paradise for skiers, connected to the Kronplatz ski area — one of the most modern and panoramic ski regions in Europe. The slopes are perfect for both beginners and advanced skiers.

In summer, the Dolomites turn into a dreamlike landscape. While seaside resorts become crowded and noisy, here you find silence, trails, and breathtaking views that regenerate both body and mind.

It is the ideal destination for a slow travel experience in the Dolomites, immersed in nature but with high-level comfort.

The Zipline: Europe’s Longest Flight Over the Forests

For thrill-seekers, San Vigilio di Marebbe is home to the longest zipline in Europe, operating since 2008.

The experience starts from the Pedagà chairlift station in the village and ends in the valley after 3 kilometers of flight at speeds up to 80 km/h, suspended over 100 meters above the ground.

There are different routes suitable for adults and children (under 12 accompanied by instructors). Safety standards are extremely high, and the structures blend into the natural environment thanks to wood-based architecture.

More than just adrenaline, this experience leaves a lasting memory: flying over the Dolomites with a 360° view is pure magic.

Hiking and Nature: The Most Authentic Side of the Dolomites

San Vigilio is one of the most beautiful gateways into the Dolomites.

From the village, you can take the Pedagà cable car to Piz de Plaies (1700 m). From there, the view opens across the entire valley. You can walk back down through forest trails that fill your lungs with fresh mountain air and your eyes with wonder.

If you are into mountain biking, you can also descend via the Piz de Plaies Trail, a 2.8 km adrenaline route made of tight curves and jumps.

From the village you can also reach Plan de Corones using three lifts: Miara, Col Toron, and Ruis. Along the way, a short walk on the Pre da Peres trail connects the stations.

Once at the top, you are rewarded with one of the most spectacular 360° panoramas in the Dolomites.

Here you also find two iconic museums:

The MMM Corones, designed by Zaha Hadid and dedicated to the history of mountaineering.

The LUMEN Museum of Mountain Photography, created from the restoration of a historic building, spread across four floors and also home to the Michelin-starred restaurant AlpiNN, by chef Norbert Niederkofler.

At the summit you also find the Concordia 2000 bell, a symbolic peace bell rung every day.

Unmissable Excursions Around San Vigilio

Fanes Plateau

A magical place made of high plateaus, alpine lakes, and deep silence. The hike through Val di Rudo leads to Rifugio Pederü, the gateway to the Fanes plateau.

From here, trails lead to Rifugio Lavarella and Rifugio Fanes, passing through scenic landscapes and gentle climbs.

Just above Lavarella, you reach the famous “Parliament of Marmots”, a natural amphitheater where marmots can often be seen in the wild.

Passo delle Erbe

At 1,987 meters above sea level, Passo delle Erbe is one of those places that feels untouched by time.

Located at the entrance of the Puez-Odle Nature Park, it offers breathtaking views of the Sass de Putia (2,875 m), a symbolic Dolomite peak.

From here, several trails start, including a beautiful 12 km loop around the mountain — a moderate hike that takes around 4–5 hours through meadows, ridges, and panoramic huts.

Brunico

A short drive from San Vigilio brings you to Brunico, a charming alpine town perfect for culture, shopping, and gastronomy.

Inside its castle you find the MMM Ripa museum, dedicated to mountain peoples from around the world.

The castle dates back to the 13th century and was built by Bruno von Kirchberg, bishop of Bressanone, to protect the Val Pusteria region.

Lago di Braies

About one hour away lies Lake Braies, one of the most famous lakes in the Dolomites.

It is undeniably beautiful, especially in the early morning light, but in recent years it has become extremely crowded due to social media and television exposure.

For this reason, it is best visited early or outside peak season, to truly enjoy its magical atmosphere.

Where to Stay: Wellness and Alpine Comfort

San Vigilio offers some of the best alpine hospitality in the Dolomites, and the accommodation here is not just about staying overnight — it is part of the experience itself.

One of the aspects that makes this destination so special is the level of care you find in its hotels: wellness areas, mountain spas, gourmet cuisine, and a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.

Hotel Teresa

This is a place I know very well, and one that has grown over the years without losing its soul.

It remains a family-run hotel with a warm and authentic atmosphere, where hospitality still feels personal. Today it features a beautiful wellness area with swimming pool, saunas, and Kneipp path — perfect after a day on the slopes or hiking trails.

And then there is something I will never forget: their apple strudel. Simple, traditional, unforgettable — the kind of detail that stays in your memory just like the mountains outside the window.

Excelsior Dolomites Life Resort

This is a step into a more exclusive dimension of mountain hospitality.

The resort offers one of the most complete wellness experiences in the area, with panoramic pools, spa facilities, and a strong focus on relaxation and design. It is ideal for those looking for a luxury stay in the Dolomites without compromising authenticity and nature.

Hotel Mareo Dolomites

Modern, elegant, and thoughtfully designed.

Hotel Mareo Dolomites combines contemporary architecture with alpine comfort. The atmosphere is quiet and refined, perfect for travelers looking for a stylish and relaxing escape in the heart of San Vigilio.

Why Choose San Vigilio di Marebbe in the Dolomites

San Vigilio is one of those rare destinations that manages to express something increasingly difficult to find: quiet luxury, authentic nature, and complete relaxation, without ever becoming excessive or artificial.

For us, luxury is not about “more”, but about better time. Time that slows down, time that restores you, time that you actually live instead of consuming. In this sense, San Vigilio represents exactly what we believe travel should be today: not low-cost speed, but meaningful quality.

It is the ideal destination for a relaxing holiday in the Dolomites, surrounded by untouched nature and deep silence. At the same time, the many hiking opportunities around San Vigilio add that perfect touch of gentle dynamism — the kind of movement that reconnects you with your body and your breath.

The charming hotels with SPA facilities and premium services complete the experience, offering a level of comfort that does not overwhelm the landscape but enhances it. Everything here feels designed for a high-quality stay that truly regenerates you.

For me, San Vigilio remains a place of the heart. A place where coming back means rediscovering something essential about yourself.

And perhaps, that is the real luxury today: not having less, but finally having time that feels truly yours.
