Capo Vaticano Resort Thalasso Spa: a Luxury Stay on the Coast of the Gods

We don’t usually review hotels, but this time we simply had to.

Because this wasn’t just a stay in a room — it was an experience that went far beyond traditional hospitality.

We are at the Capo Vaticano Resort Thalasso Spa, nestled right next to Capo Vaticano on the breathtaking Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) in Calabria, southern Italy.

Choosing a Luxury Resort in Calabria

It all started with the idea of a long weekend by the sea.

We chose Calabria almost instinctively. It was still unexplored for us, and with a convenient flight into Reggio Calabria Tito Minniti Airport, it felt like the perfect destination.

When traveling, most people focus on what to see and do, often prioritizing activities over accommodation. Budget stays are usually the default choice.

But for us, where we sleep is just as important as where we go.

A hotel is not just a place to spend the night — it is part of the journey itself, shaping the entire travel experience.

I still remember a trip to India, when our teenage daughter Giulia looked at me and smiled:

“You don’t understand me. I’m a resort person.”

We were far outside everyone’s comfort zone — including ours.

Since then, I kept thinking about a luxury seaside resort where she could feel pampered from the very first moment. And this Calabrian weekend felt like the perfect opportunity.

The resort is about 1.5 hours from Reggio Calabria Airport, easily reachable by rental car or private transfer arranged by the hotel.

We had no doubts about the area: friends and colleagues kept recommending Capo Vaticano as one of the most beautiful spots in Calabria. And they were absolutely right.

Capo Vaticano: The Most Scenic Spot on the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea

Famous for its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and dramatic coastal views, Capo Vaticano is one of the most spectacular locations along the Costa degli Dei.

It is a true paradise for travelers seeking unspoiled nature and unforgettable sunsets over the sea.

From the beach in front of the resort, the unmistakable silhouette of Stromboli volcano rises on the horizon.

This region is not only about postcard-perfect landscapes. It is also rich in agriculture and authentic Calabrian flavors.

Here you’ll find the famous red onion of Tropea (IGP), fragrant citrus fruits including prized bergamot, and ancient olive groves shaping the landscape.

And of course, Calabria would not be complete without ’Nduja, the iconic spicy spreadable salami.

Nearby, just a few minutes away, lies Tropea, awarded “Borgo dei Borghi” in 2021 — one of Italy’s most beautiful villages.

Choosing Capo Vaticano turned out to be a perfect decision. In fact, we’ve already mentally booked our return.

Our Experience at Capo Vaticano Resort Thalasso Spa

The choice of this resort was almost accidental.

While exploring beaches like Praia i Focu and ‘A Ficara, the resort area kept appearing on our map — large, elegant, impossible to ignore.

We visited the website… and immediately fell in love.

A booking followed without hesitation.

The road down to the resort is full of curves, each turn revealing more of the coastline’s beauty.

From the very first moment, the welcome was flawless.

The staff greeted us warmly, offering refreshing drinks and cool towels while our luggage was handled and the car taken to the underground parking.

Check-in was smooth, professional, and surprisingly relaxing.

We stayed in a quadruple room, perfect for a family stay. Spacious, comfortable, with an elegant bathroom and a balcony overlooking the palm-lined central avenue.

This long avenue, with its decorative water features, leads directly to the sea — passing restaurants with outdoor pergolas and shaded seating areas.

At the end of the path lies one of the resort’s most iconic features: the beach swing facing the sea.

Let’s just say… with a teenager in the family, we spent a lot of time there trying to capture the perfect shot.

Beach, Pools & Thalasso Spa Experience in Calabria

The resort’s private beach is wide and sandy, with sunbeds positioned slightly elevated to enjoy sweeping views over the Costa degli Dei.

Just behind it, a stunning seawater infinity pool gently slopes into the horizon — perfect for long, slow afternoons of relaxation.

A beach bar completes the experience, serving cocktails, fresh salads, and light lunches.

One of the highlights is the Thalasso Spa, included for guests for up to two hours per day.

Robes are provided at reception, and towels are available at the spa entrance.

The spa features heated seawater pools, hydro-massage stations targeting different areas of the body, a Kneipp path, sauna, and Turkish bath.

Thalassotherapy uses seawater, algae, and marine minerals to promote relaxation, improve circulation, and regenerate both body and mind.

Relaxation areas, herbal teas, fresh fruit, and outdoor loungers make the experience even more restorative.

For sports lovers, the resort also offers tennis courts and equipment rental.

We also used the resort as a base to explore the area: Tropea is just minutes away, and boat trips along the coast are among the most popular activities.

Unfortunately, rough seas cancelled our boat excursion — but in return, we gained more time to enjoy the hotel.

And honestly? We didn’t mind at all.

Breakfast: A Perfect Morning Ritual

Breakfast at the Capo Vaticano Resort Thalasso Spa is more than a meal — it’s a ritual.

Served from 7:30 to 10:30, it features an abundant buffet of homemade sweet and savory dishes prepared in the resort’s pastry and bakery labs.

Freshly baked cakes, organic jams, fresh juices, and local citrus fruits bring a genuine touch of Calabria to the table.

Live cooking stations offer freshly made omelettes and pancakes.

Guests can choose between Italian or international breakfast styles — and given the resort’s global clientele, the international selection is impressively rich.

We were actually the only Italian family there.

Where to Eat in Capo Vaticano

If you’re wondering where to eat in Capo Vaticano, you’ll find excellent options ranging from traditional agriturismos to refined seaside restaurants.

Calabrian cuisine is rich in fresh seafood, Tropea red onions, bergamot citrus, and high-quality olive oil.

In our case, fully embraced by relaxation mode, we chose to dine at the resort.

And it was an excellent decision.

The resort offers two high-level restaurants celebrating Calabrian cuisine with a modern twist.

Strombolicchio Restaurant

Located by the sea and open also to external guests, it offers fresh fish, raw seafood, shellfish, and daily catches — all paired with stunning views of the Aeolian Islands.

The atmosphere is elegant yet relaxed, perfect even for a stylish summer evening outfit.

Matineo Restaurant

Located beneath the main building with garden views, it focuses on traditional “poor cuisine” reinterpretations — highlighting simple, local ingredients with great creativity.

We loved how each dish was narrated by the staff, turning dinner into a cultural experience rooted in local identity and sustainability.

Final Thoughts: A Luxury Escape We Didn’t Want to Leave

Capo Vaticano Resort Thalasso Spa impressed us on every level.

From the comfort of the rooms to the beauty of the spa, from the private beach to the incredible food experience, everything contributes to a stay that blends relaxation, nature, and authentic local culture.

It is perfect for families, couples, or anyone looking for a luxury escape on one of Italy’s most stunning coastlines.
